Unlike POFT2P I live on the East Coast. Well, not right on the coast, that’s a tad too expensive. Given my geographic situation, , however, I was taken by Sarah Palin’s contempt for all of the elected officials of that region.
How did the whole area become Sodom? Or is it Gomorrah?
This fellow smells condescension and hypocrisy, but it is a political campaign so that’s not much of a revelation. What is interesting in Palin’s comment is the imputation that the East Coast is somehow dominating the rest of the country, imposing our rotten values on everyone else. I would argue that our rotten values are your rotten values, mi casa es su casa. If you go far enough West, you come to somebody’s East.
A better strategy would be to look underneath us — not to one side or the other — for the source of all our problems. If it’s the inhabitants of the hollow earth who are causing all the problems then that saves us from doubting the motives and cultures of any of our fellow Americans, native and immigrant, and that would be mostly immigrant. Now that the rest of the world is either ticked off at us or owns us, we better stick together like white on rice or white on brown rice or vice versa or like the lovely multicolored rice pilaf.
And thank you Strange Maps!!
“The folly of mistaking a paradox for a discovery, a metaphor for a proof, a torrent of verbiage for a spring of capital truths, and oneself for an oracle, is inborn in us.” -Paul Valery, poet and philosopher (1871-1945) Introduction to the Methods of Leonardo da Vinci
First reaction: As I stand here on the Mexican border – OK, I lied because I’m home, but it’s close enough – your full-gainer into the Spanish language reminded me that when I last came East, you took me to a Mexican restaurant because of its reputed “authenticity.” Hey, redundancy is a gift…
Pursuant to the opinion of a particular, nameless for our purposes, religious persuasion, the Lord had cause to drop by America immediately prior to the Resurrection. While I personally do not hold this belief myself, I am reasonably confident that this event did not occur in NJ. In fact, in a recently discovered scroll, it seems that “Sodom” is a near-identical translation of “Newark” (I was going to say, “park your camel and it will be stolen,” but discretion suggested it was, in fact, too much).
As a point of clarification, our values are determined by Proposition (pick a number, any number…), which reach the CA ballot by way of paid “signature-getters” who make you regret every needing to shop for groceries and such. But, actual values are “derivative,” determined by the CA Supreme Court, who will inevitably (and invariably) find all Propositions “unconstitutional.” My Bible? Look no further…
